Stack Overflow questions per year

As humanity flung increasing numbers of satellites into low Earth orbit between 2015 and 2023—largely courtesy of SpaceX and its improbable reusable rockets—Stack Overflow questions declined, suggesting that either programmers are getting smarter or they have all been launched into space. The inverse correlation of -0.9666 is striking. One theory holds that the same engineers who once posted confused questions about Python decorators are now too busy designing satellite firmware to bother. Another theory is that ChatGPT ate Stack Overflow's lunch. The satellites are, as yet, not answering questions.

Satellite launches grew explosively after 2019 due to the commercial launch industry's maturation, SpaceX's Starlink constellation deployment, and a wave of small-sat startups—from roughly 400 launches annually in 2015 to over 2,400 by 2023. Stack Overflow question volume peaked around 2013–2014 and has declined since, with the trend accelerating sharply after 2021 due to the rise of AI coding assistants like GitHub Copilot and ChatGPT, which answer questions faster than community forums. The inverse relationship reflects two separate technological eras: one ascending, one being disrupted.

One industry is being built; another is being disintermediated. That their trajectories point in opposite directions over nine years tells us something real about technology cycles—but nothing about causation.
