Americans identifying as LGBTQ doubled across this window, driven mostly by Gen Z's willingness to use the labels in surveys. AI papers on arXiv grew from about 9,000 in 2012 to over 100,000 by 2023 as transformer-era research, large-language-model architectures, and a global wave of AI/ML scholarship expanded output. Two completely unrelated lines sharing a window because the same twelve years scaled both demographic-self-identification and an academic publishing volume. Different visibilities, same era of expansion.
